Eindhoven

Eindhoven is a dynamic and modern city in the south of the Netherlands. It is situated in the province Brabant, where “Brabantse gezelligheid” is present through the friendliness of the people. It is the fifth biggest city in the Netherlands with a population of almost 225.000 inhabitants on a scale of 88 km².

Eindhoven is a city of contrasts, with modern office buildings rising next to old factory buildings of the twenties and thirties. However, Eindhoven is most famous for its High Technical Innovation, showing by the presence of the Technical University, Brainport Eindhoven and the High Tech Campus. Nonetheless, the most famous icon of the city is of course Philips. This historical light bulb factory developed into a well known technology firm nowadays, being the head sponsor of the local football team and current national champion PSV up until 2016.

The heart of the center gives place for shops of all sizes and numerous restaurants and cafés give the city a vibrant, cozy and lively atmosphere. At night time Stratumseind is the place to be, which is a street filled with pubs and cafés where people can enjoy themselves with a drink or a dance. Furthermore, the city holds a lot of events throughout the year, many of them dedicated to Eindhoven as a 'light city'. Events are for example the "lichtjesroute", which is a route during the night where you can drive through a decorated and 'lit up' city and GLOW Eindhoven, an event which each years gets more popular and where the main sights of Eindhoven get decorated with lights and the newest technological innovations.

Why I love Eindhoven

First of all, Eindhoven is my hometown. I was born and raised in this city and I have been living here for 23 years now. It is safe to say I am a real “Eindhovenaar”. What I especially love about Eindhoven is the fact that it has everything I need, but nothing more. It is a big and lively city, but not too big that it gets overcrowded. I love the friendliness and openness of the people and all the habits we have in the south of the Netherlands, like celebrating carnaval and singing along with Guus Meeuwis at the PSV stadion every summer.

Some people say Eindhoven is less ‘pretty’ than other cities in the Netherlands. Because it got bombed during the second world war, there are less historical factors than in Amsterdam or Utrecht for example. However, in my opinion Eindhoven makes up for it with all the modern development and high tech innovation. They don’t call Eindhoven the city of lights for no reason!

Whether I will live in Eindhoven all my life, that I don’t know. However, I do know for sure that wherever I might go and how far I will travel, coming home for me means coming back to Eindhoven.
